That’s a great question, because if every little thing around a house were an emergency, none of us would ever get anything else done.
My first question would be: What happens if you don’t fix it?
If the answer is probably nothing for a while, it may belong on the “wait ’til later” list.
If the answer is that it could cause additional damage or create a safety issue, I’d move it toward the top.
Water is probably the easiest example. A dripping faucet may be annoying, but depending on the cause, it may not be an emergency. Water coming through the ceiling, a leaking pipe, or water getting in around a window or roof is different. Water has an unfortunate habit of turning a relatively inexpensive repair into a much more expensive one if you give it enough time.
The same goes for safety. An electrical problem, the smell of gas, a loose stair railing, or anything that could potentially hurt someone deserves prompt attention—and usually the attention of a qualified professional.
Then there are the things most of us have around our homes: a door that sticks, a small crack in the driveway, peeling paint in a room, a dripping faucet, or that cabinet door you’ve been meaning to adjust since 2017. 😊
Those aren’t necessarily emergencies. Put them on the list and get to them when you can.
Over the years, I’ve developed a pretty simple rule:
Safety issues, water problems, and anything that is actively getting worse go to the top of the list.
Everything else can usually get in line.
And don’t feel as though you have to know the answer yourself. If you’re unsure whether something is serious, ask someone who does know. A good contractor, plumber, electrician, roofer, or other professional should be able to help you understand whether you’re looking at something that needs attention today—or something that can reasonably wait.
Owning a home doesn’t mean fixing everything the moment you notice it.
It means learning what can wait—and what shouldn’t.
Every home and every situation is unique. If I can answer a question or offer guidance, I’d be happy to help. It all starts with a conversation.
