Yes—and this is one of those simple habits that can become surprisingly valuable over the years.
Every home develops a history.
You replace the roof. Install a new heating and air-conditioning system. Replace the water heater. Remodel a bathroom. Add a deck. Replace windows. Have electrical or plumbing work done.
At the time, you know exactly what was done, who did it, and when.
Ten years later? Maybe not so much.
I recommend keeping a simple file for the important improvements and repairs you make to your home. It doesn't have to be elaborate, and it can be paper or digital—whatever works best for you.
Keep things like paid invoices, permits and approvals, warranties, contractor information, and manuals or model numbers for major equipment.
Those records can be helpful when something needs repair, you have a warranty question, or you simply can't remember who did the work or exactly when it was done.
But there's another reason that I've seen many times in real estate.
If you eventually decide to sell your home, good records can help tell the story of how the home has been cared for.
When a homeowner can show when the roof was replaced, when the HVAC system was installed, what work was done, and—when appropriate—that permits were obtained, it can give a future buyer something very important:
Confidence.
I've walked through homes where the owner has kept years of records, warranties, receipts, and information about improvements. There's something reassuring about it.
Fairly or not, a well-documented home is often perceived as a well-cared-for home. It gives the impression that someone has paid attention to the house, maintained it, and taken pride in owning it.
So, my advice is simple: start a home file and keep it somewhere you'll remember.
When you make a significant repair or improvement, take a minute and put the paperwork in the file.
Your future self—and perhaps someday a future buyer—may be very glad you did.
Every home and every situation is unique. If I can answer a question or offer guidance, I'd be happy to help. It all starts with a conversation.
